Valve announced in early May that they to release a video game streaming app called Steam Link to iOS via AppStore, but that is now put on hold. Valve has confirmed the app was rejected by Apple Review the day after the announcement. What's more interesting is that Valve claims the app had been approved prior to the announcement. Valve says that Apple reversed its decision for what the company describes as "business conflicts with app guidelines", Mac Stories reports.
Steam Link is supposed to allow iOS users to stream Steam games from a Mac or PC to an iOS device or Apple TV using fast WiFi or Ethernet. Some people questioned the reasons behind Apple's rejection and claimed themselves the move was motivated to protect gaming on iOS devices and the Apple TV. Now Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller has confirmed to Mac Stories, what he makes of the case: "We care deeply about bringing great games to all of our users on the App Store. We would love for Valve's games and services to be on iOS and AppleTV. Unfortunately, the review team found that Valve's Steam iOS app, as currently submitted, violates a number of guidelines around user-generated content, in-app purchases, content codes, etc. We've discussed these issues with Valve and will continue to work with them to help bring the Steam experience to iOS and AppleTV in a way that complies with the store's guidelines."
Some of this may easy enough to navigate, like in-app purchases (after all there are similar apps for streaming say movies where Apple don't necessarily take a cut), but the part about user-generated content may be difficult to overcome. Remains to be seen if Valve makes adjustments to their plans or whether they feel strongly about delivering the full Steam experience.
