Dark Souls III offers up the same multiplayer integration that the series is known for, but it would seem that at one point, it was set to offer something quite different indeed.
Youtube user Lance McDonald makes a living out of datamining popular games for clues about the development, and recently he shifted his focus from Bloodborne to Dark Souls III, and almost immediately found something interesting - the game had, at one point, a multiplayer mode called "Battle Royale".
McDonald has revealed his findings through Twitter, but it's unlikely that the mode was anything similar to what PUBG would later popularise.
Still, how could Battle Royale work in a Dark Souls-inspired setting?
