Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

Frank's back to the lead role of the series that made his name. But is this a new game, a remix of the sequel, or something in-between? Gamereactor brought its shades and camera along to Capcom's Captivate to find out.

Capcom's second major announcement at Captivate was the return of Frank West, who'll clamber out of the DLC gutter and into a full-sized Dead Rising game.

Unfortunately it is not time for DR3 just yet. Instead Capcom Vancouver wants us to sees the full events that unfolded in Fortune City from the war reporter's point of view, if a certain Chuck Greene hadn't stolen the spotlight. Dead Rising producer Jason Leigh wanted to stress that Off the record is not a canon but a shift to an alternate reality (where have we heard that before?)

"The game was originally meant to be a kind of a Director's Cut. However the fan response for Frank's absence in DR2 was so strong that it was obvious we needed to bring him back to the game in big way."

So same shit, different guy.

Many familiar elements return in Off the Record from the original Dead Rising, one of which, obviously will be Frank's photography skills. Taking photographs will play a big role in the game and Frank will of course have his unique set of moves for dispatching zombies.

Jason Lee also promises a lot of improvements to the core game play. "There will be a game mode, a huge new area which is neither a mall or a casino, and many new psychopaths. The new game mode is definitely my favourite thing in the game. It is something that the fans have requesting ever since the first DR. The game will also feature an improved check point feature and shorter loading times for many fans who expressed frustration on those aspects of both DR games."

Chuck Greene will be making a return but only in a support role, and join the fun if you buddy up with someone for a cooperative run through the game, though there'll be no other multiplayer element to the title - looks like "Terror is Reality" game show is out this time round.

Dead Rising 2: Off The Record will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 with a release scheduled this autumn. Its not a downloadable title, but, according to Leigh, will be appropriately priced due to its "Director's Cut" tag.

For more information we will have to wait until this years E3 where Leigh promises to reveal a lot of the new features.
