EA have posted the results for their fiscal year (ending March 31), and it's one for the record books as revenue grew to an all-time high $4.2 billion, but the real story here is that digital sales contributed a whopping $1.2 billion (up 47 per cent). Profits for the year landed on $284 million ($233 million in 2011).

As for the most recent quarter overall revenue was down slightly to $977 million (from $995 million), but once again it was clear that the digital contribution is growing as digital sales reached $425 million (up from $268 million in 2011).

There are several factors that have lead to this very significant shift towards digital products - the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic is one, the storming success of FIFA Ultimate Team ("the second best-selling EA product in the UK during this period"), and EA's Play4Free division that currently racks in $2 million per week in revenue.

EA predicts revenue of $500 million for the next quarter with total revenue for the next fiscal year at $4.3 billion, landing slightly below market expectations, which has led to a drop in the stock price.
