One of the games that struck us the most at the Fun & Serious Game Festival in Bilbao last week was Endling, as even though it still has a long development ahead, it already looked and played
like something very special, as it reminded us of Inside, but with the delicate touch of Okami.
"I'd like to say that it's a narrative adventure with some hints of survival," Herobeat Studios' Javier Ramello tells us in the video interview below. "You have a mother fox, the last fox on Earth in a dystopian future and you have to take care of your three little cubs, so the experience is all about the player feeling the empathy with the cubs. And we want the player to get committed to saving them; it's an eco-conscious adventure, so we're trying to deliver a message here".
You really have to take care of those little cubs, as the game features permadeath and "they grow and learn skills". The full video also includes some exclusive gameplay to show how the survival mechanics work.
Herobeat wants to create "something meaningful" as their very first game, and will be developing Endling for 24 months from now, aiming at a potential release at the end of 2020.
Does the concept sound enticing?
