Not happy with going after Steam with their own Epic Store, Fortnite creators Epic Games has now announced a new cross-platform online service. According to the official blog, all these features will be free to all developers, open to all engines, and compatible with all digital stores and platforms. These services were originally built for Fortnite, but can be used in pretty much every game, according to Epic.
And why is it free? Because Epic's goal is to "help game developers succeed", also according to the same blog entry.
These services will be released throughout 2019, and include cross-platform login and social tools, voice comms, parties and matchmaking systems, data storage and cloud-saving, and support for Achievements and Trophies.
A goodwill move then following the revolutionary revenue sharing model of Epic Games store and hopefully a move that will enable more cross-platform multiplayer experiences.
