One of the more prominent booths at this year's PAX East was that of Scum (or SCUM if you will), a new sort of survival game with realistic body simulation and emphasis on teamwork, from developer Gamepires and publisher Devolver Digital. We had a lengthy chat with technical artist Andrej Levenski to learn more about the promising game.
"Every character will be different," says Levenski. "And we achieve that with complete body simulation and metabolism. When we talk about survival games, first thing that comes to our mind is realistic simulation."
This means that every piece of food crafted or otherwise consists of proteins and carbs and your body will develop accordingly, and the same goes for physical exercise. The result is characters with different shapes, strengths, and weaknesses that populate the world.
The interview also covers toilet needs, as well as the setting of this rather bleak scenario. Basically, the entire island is a prison where a corporation uses its prisoners are expendable in a bloodsports reality TV format.
Scum is currently slated for Early Access release on Steam during the second quarter (that could mean any day now!).
