Dead Rising 4 got a fairly mixed reception when it launched back in December, but Capcom Vancouver has been working hard to improve the game ever since. They aren't planning to stop anytime soon either.

We're now told that the game will get a big update on December 5 that will include a whole bunch of fan-requested changes. One of the most noteworthy ones is smarter and more challenging Maniacs. The update will make them wield new weapons that fit with their character. This is obviously also kind of good news for us, as Frank will be able to use these weapons after defeating the enemies. However, that won't be easy, as the AI is also getting improved to make all the human enemies smarter and more aggressive. They'll use cover more often and smarter, block attacks with shields and counter our attacks. As if that wasn't enough, some of the Maniacs will even have new Maniac Minions that will try to overwhelm us.

We're also getting more content in the form of new missions called "Distress Calls". Answering one of these six calls will give us a task from one of the survivors. Once we've accomplished this assigned task, we'll have to protect the survivor from the zombie hordes as he/she tries to reach a safe location. Each of these six Distress Calls rewards us with a unique variation on one of Frank's outfits.

Then there are the more general fixes. Capcom claims that they're improving the responsiveness of the controls, increasing the attack speed, heightening the zombie horde awareness, making them more aggressive in pursuits, rebalanced weapon distribution, improved zombie AI, mission tuning and many other things. You can see some of these in action in the trailer below.

What do you think about the changes?

REVIEW. Written by Bengt Lemne

"In many ways, Dead Rising 4 steps even further away from the original game in terms of its structure."
