The Electronic Frontier Foundation is a non-profit group that defends civil liberties in the digital world. If you haven't heard about this foundation before, then now might be a good time to listen up.

The organisation has recently filed a request for the US Copyright Office for an exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The reason? They want to make sure that gamers can keep abandoned online games alive by modifying code and making it available to all.

That could mean a chance to play or replay classics like Battlefield 1942, the original Star Wars: Battlefront, SOCOM 4, Resistance: Fall of Man and plenty of other classics.

The EFF has been making moves to secure these rights for a while (we first reported on their efforts last year), and if they're successful, looking forward, it might be a way to keep playing games like World of Warcraft and Destiny legally if they're ever abandoned by their developers/publishers.
