Phil Ring, producer at TT Games, talked to Mathias Holmberg at Gamescom this year. They discussed Lego Lord of the Rings, the voice of Sir Ian McKellen and walking all the way to Mordor.
On questing in LLotR: "We wanted to make sure that there was some really cool questing items within there as well, so what will happen as you're playing through the world and you enter somewhere like The Prancing Pony is you'll come across a dwarf who's lost his silver shield and it's in Moria. So you head off to Moria and find the shield and you'll take it back to him and you'll get to have a kind of quest and he'll give you a reward for it. So we're making this a much bigger experience."
We asked just how big Middle-Earth was in the game: "It's absolutely massive... you can walk all the way from Hobbiton, all the way to Mordor... You go to all these great locations: you can go to Rivendell. You can go to Moria... It‘s a much bigger world."
Much of a dialogue is lifted directly from the films, but there are new characters set to feature too: "We've got the voices from the movies, so Sir Ian McKellen is saying lines as Gandalf but as a mini-figure, which is absolutely fantastic for us. We knew that we wanted to have some additional audio so what we've actually got is some new characters, for example, the dwarf that gives you the quest to find his shield. So we've had new actors come in to record his voice."
