Deus Ex: Mankind Divided only released last year, but it looks as if Square Enix is reevaluating the importance of the Deus Ex franchise, with Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics' Avengers project looking likely to take up their collective time instead.

Eurogamer reports that, after having failed to meet sales expectations, the majority of the workforce has been moved over to develop the next Tomb Raider game (which apparently will be called Shadows of the Tomb Raider).

On top of that, Square Enix has just announced a partnership with Marvel to work on The Avengers Project in a collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. The same report claims the studio will also develop a second Marvel game based on Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving little room for more Deus Ex in the short term.

If the report is true and Deus Ex has been put on the back burner, it represents a stark contrast to the bullish confidence surrounding the series during the development of its latest entry, where Square Enix were talking about building the universe across different media. After the strong performance enjoyed by Deus Ex: Human Revolution, it very much looked like more success would follow, but the reception to the second game in Eidos Montreal's trilogy simply wasn't as strong.

Could this mean that Square Enix is going to keep us waiting a lot longer for the conclusion to various story elements seen in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and looking back further, the story arc as started in Human Revolution? This is what the publisher had to say in response to the original report:

"While we are still working on expanding the Deus Ex Universe, along with creating new content and updates for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, we're also devoting our talents towards working with Crystal Dynamics and Marvel on The Avengers project."

If you had to pick two for Square Enix to work on out of the Marvel projects, Deus Ex, or Tomb Raider, which two would you pick?
