Developer Deck 13 first came to prominence with its Souls-like fantasy-adventure Lords of the Fallen, which landed back in 2014 (you can read our review of the game right here if you'd like to know more). Still, the studio didn't immediately go for a sequel, and instead they made a sci-fi game called The Surge, while publisher CI Games moved forward with the fantasy IP without the developer.

CI Games started playing with ideas for the sequel back in 2015, although the publisher has since given the job to Defiant Studios, with the announcement that the studio (which was started by former Avalanche devs after they had wrapped up development on Just Cause 3) had taken over the reins made earlier this year. Now it seems as though Defiant has decided to restart the game from scratch, mainly because the studio will be using a new game engine, Unreal Engine 4.

"It's really a reset, it's a fresh start," Defiant Studios' David Grijns told Eurogamer. "It's a new engine - Unreal 4 - and a new team. A team which does not have a long and illustrious background in action RPG development, but we actually see it as a strength."

Defiant also got the nod because of its ambition to take on the dominance of From Software, but time will tell whether the team is able to deliver a game that stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
