Mario Kart Tour is Apple's most-downloaded free game

This week Apple celebrate the best and most downloaded games in New York City, and as reported by Kotaku, iPhone game of the year is Sky: Children of the Light, with Hyper Light Drifter getting the same accolade for iPad.

Perhaps more interestingly, however, is the fact that Mario Kart Tour is the most downloaded free game of the year, with Minecraft is at the top of the paid charts (which is not as much of a surprise, however). This is all the more interesting when you consider that Mario Kart Tour was only released in September.

That's not to say that it's been plain sailing for Mario Kart Tour this year though, as it's come under fire for its monetisation methods, including a subscription fee for 200cc and other features; a gacha system to gamble for in-game items; and wildly expensive packs like the Diddy Kong one for £38.99.
