You can go down to your local tech store right now and buy a pair of "smartphone gloves" for a couple of pounds. They're not advanced technology, nor are they harder or more expensive to make. Of course, it hasn't always been this way, but today, the fact that mittens, or gloves, can answer a quick call is not in itself particularly innovative or ground-breaking.
But of course, there are manufacturers out there who are taking it a step further, and Mujjo has done so on several occasions with more expensive, more stylish and more premium smartphone gloves. You can buy the fancy ones in relatively thin leather, but we think it's actually far more interesting to take a closer look at the more extreme ski gloves. So that's what we've done.
Okay, let's get it out of the way right off the bat that these are serious gloves. We're talking water-repellent microfleece, 3M Thinsulate, double insulation and arguably designed in such a way that manoeuvrability is sacrificed for warmth. On the whole, there's a fairly central complaint that it's decidedly difficult to move your fingers individually, but at the same time, you have to recognise that those who want to buy a pair of Mujjo Touchscreen Gloves in this Double-Insulated variant probably want a pair of warm, ski-like gloves more than anything else.
So what about the whole Touchscreen thing? Well, the idea is that it's not just the fingertip that's covered in the material that allows you to operate a touch surface, but the entire inside of the glove. You can actually see it clearly via a silicone pattern on the front that indicates where the touch capacity is.
This also means that there is good grip, but while they are both warm and incredibly responsive to touch, it's still a problem that they are as insulated as they are. It's really hard to grip an iPhone 15 Pro Max, and even harder to use your thumb independently of the rest of your fingers to check a quick email or answer a call without taking off your gloves.
I don't have a good fix here, because Mujjo definitely didn't have a completely ridiculous idea when designing these gloves, but they're a little too thick for me, because touch should mean that they're thin enough to be comfortable to use a smartphone with.
We're looking forward to trying other products from Mujjo, no doubt about it, because it seems that these in particular are for a very specific use case.
