New Mario Kart for Switch is the AR-based Live: Home Circuit

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is the brand-new invention introduced by Nintendo and Velan Studios today, as part of Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary celebrations. The unique idea puts real RC toy cars on your living room floor (or pretty much wherever you want), and the cars come equipped with a camera to send live footage to the console. The result is Mario Kart races on real-life user-created tracks, as the cars are controlled with the console (on TV or handheld) and affected by AR-overlaid elements such as special items and power-ups.

The trailer above is self-explanatory, and up to four players can compete in these tracks via local Wi-Fi connection. For now, there are Mario and Luigi models for the karts, and the circuits are built via a series of checkpoint gates, which come included in the box.

So just imagine: you create your race track around your couch and underneath your coffee table, then use a power star or a blue shell to overtake your physical rivals, and finally take some random hazards such as that cute kitty of yours into account.
