Nintendo are today celebrating reaching a rather significant milestone, as the company is now 125 years old.

Of course, in recent years, they're known for making consoles and video games, but the Kyoto-based firm started life in 1889 by making Hanafuda cards that were used in a variety of different games.

This remained the company's main product until they expanding into the world of making toys in the late 1950s. This was an area where they struggled until the company released Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi's first creation, the Ultra Hand. That sold millions, and set Nintendo on their current path.

Obviously it was their move into video games that made them a household name around the world, with designer Shigeru Miyamoto creating the titles that would propel them onto the international stage.

Thanks to consoles like the NES, SNES, Game Boy and Wii, Nintendo continue as one of the leading lights in the industry to this day, with their current console Wii U slowly picking up momentum, and the Nintendo 3DS handheld continuing to sell well around the world.

Happy birthday Nintendo!
