Every time a Nintendo console performs below expectations, like the GameCube and Wii U, some people start suggesting that Nintendo should leave their own hardware behind and focus on delivering software on other platforms. Up until now Nintendo has persisted with home consoles though, but that might change.

Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo's current President, was recently interviewed by Nikkei (with a translation courtesy of Nintendo Everything), and here he said that, in the long-term, Nintendo might shift away from developing home consoles. Furukawa believes Nintendo must be flexible and adaptable, and recalled Nintendo existed before they started doing consoles 30 years ago.

According to Furukawa, Nintendo is now looking to develop further games-as-services for mobile, while also considering live-action films and theme parks as "different ways to have our characters be a part of everyday life".

The present and the near future though are all about the Nintendo Switch, as this is where the company currently wants to deliver the "Nintendo Experience".

Where do you want to see Nintendo go in the future?
