Alan Wake and Quantum Break are two games developed by Remedy and published by Microsoft, meaning the licenses belong to the publisher and not the studio, but so far Microsoft has decided not to pursue sequels for either game, even if developer Remedy built both worlds to continue, something that Remedy's CEO Tero Virtala discussed during an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

Their next project, Control, won't be published by Microsoft, meaning the IP will be kept as the studio's property, allowing them to decide its future and where to release it. That's why it's also coming to PC and PS4, as well as Xbox One.

"Considering our history... Alan Wake was really interesting but it was a collaboration with Microsoft. Due to certain reasons, it never got a sequel. Quantum Break, also, we put a lot of effort into creating the world, the characters, the stories, but still it was Microsoft IP. They decided not to take it further. If we owned the IP, it's fully in our hands to decide how we create it, how we develop, what are the creative decisions that we take? And then maybe one day in the future, if it proves to be successful, it's again in our hands to decide what will be done. That was important for us."
