Respawn on the origins of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

We talked to game director Stig Asmussen at EA Play and found out more about the upcoming action-adventure set in A Galaxy Far, Far Away.

One of the first people we got to meet up with ahead of this year's E3 was Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game director Stig Asmussen, who gave us a quick overview of the game and what it'll have players doing.

"It is an authentic Star Wars story that takes places in the years between Order 66 and Episode III and Episode IV about a Jedi who's on the run being hunted by the entire Empire," the man from Respawn told us during EA Play. "Third-person, action-adventure, single-player game focusing on traversal and melee combat and that's all kind of wrapped up in a metroidvania design."

Asmussen then got into the origins of the game, and how the studio's work on another title, one that never saw the light of day, formed the foundations of this adventure set in A Galaxy Far, Far Away.

"The second team at Respawn, we were working on a different game and I guess you could say that a lot of the DNA that is in the Star Wars game now, just on a very basic gameplay mechanic level, was born out of the other game that we were working on, and that game had [the beginning of the combat system] that we have in this game, which we back then called 'thoughtful combat'.

"It also had an exploration pillar that included having a character or a hero that could do things beyond normal human abilities to kind of dominate the world, eventually. We wanted to, as I mentioned before, take a metroidvania-type approach in the level design where you get a lot of satisfaction through getting new abilities, unlocking new areas and areas [where] you've been before and having re-traversal be a big part of that, having fun while re-traversing because the new abilities are letting you dominate enemies and environments in ways you didn't the first time you went through.

"So those were all basic things we were trying to do. And when we presented this game to EA, they loved it, but they came back and said 'Hey, would you guys like to do Star Wars instead?' So we kind of put that game on ice, but a lot of the foundation of it ended up going into Star Wars. And then we had to figure out 'well how can we make some of these things work in the Star Wars Universe?', and that's what we got to work doing."
