Snake Pass is Sumo Digital's first original IP after years and years of working on other people's properties, and after sitting down and chatting with Seb Liese, the game's designer, at EGX this year, it looks like the game is shaping up nicely. In Snake Pass, as the title suggests, you control a snake in his efforts to explore the world and collect every item in each of the levels.
The way the snake controls is quite realistic - in order to build up speed you must 'slither' from side to side just as a snake does in the real world. In our hands-on preview of the game, we praised its uniqueness and acknowledged its promise, and this slithery platformer getting ever closer to completion.
We had loads of time with the game; first off Liese told us a little about the game, then showcased what the later levels will be like. Levels for the game seem similar to games like Banjo Kazooie - placing an emphasis on collection and exploring to complete levels. "It's very much the colourful platforming adventure games from the 90's [that inspired us]," Liese said. "The games that were all about just having fun with your character, exploring the world."
"It's 50% exploration, 50% puzzling," Liese told us. "But maybe not puzzling in the traditional sense of the word. I'd like to call it dexterity puzzling; it's about figuring how to get to the point you want to be, how do I get my awkward character to get to the place I need to be."
You can check out both the presentation of the game and our interview with Liese below. We're looking forward to see where this game goes in the run up to release. It's set to come out for PS4, PC, and Xbox One in Q1 of next year.
