There's no doubt that many players want to see a modern version of System Shock, as Nightdive Studios' System Shock Remake got more than $1.3 million dollars during its Kickstarter campaign back in 2016. That's why we think today's announcement is a good news - bad news situation.

The bad news is that Nightdive Studios has announced that they've decided to put System Shock Remake on hiatus. The good news is that it's because they want the remake to stay as faithful as possible to the original. Stephen Kick, the CEO of Nightdive, says they got too ambitious, which lead to a few changes that made the project look more like a new game than System Shock. They'd started straying from the core concepts of the original, something they now realise isn't what the Kickstarter backers want. Kick takes full responsibility for this mistake, saying:

Ultimately the responsibility for the decisions rests with me. As the CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, a company that was built on the restoration of the System Shock franchise, I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers.

They've now put the team on a hiatus while they reassess their way forward, and how they can return to their original vision. He does, however, want to make it absolutely clear that they're not canceling the project. We're promised that System Shock Remake will be completed. They just want to deliver the game they promised.

What do you think of the decision?
