Before Forza Motorsport launched back in 2005, Need for Speed and Gran Turismo were consider the best racings series by the majority of players. However, it didn't take long for Turn 10 and Playground Games' Forza series to grow immensely in popularity. Year after year we've seen some impressive sales numbers, so today's news shouldn't be all that surprising.

Microsoft has announced that the two series combined have surpassed $1 billion USD in sales, and that's just counting retail. This is no doubt a very impressive number, and we're sure it would be even higher if we included digital sales.

They also announced that last year's entry, Forza Horizon 3, has surpassed 2.5 million units sold, and that more than 14 million players have played a Forza game across Xbox One and PC - quite impressive numbers for a genre some consider niche.

Do you think Need for Speed and Gran Turismo have a chance to put up a good race again?
