As we move towards a cleaner world, there has been a lot of pressure put on transport companies
- and the technology that they use - to create vehicles that don't use fossil fuels, don't leave a carbon emission trail, and so forth. To this end, the UK government has been funding a research programme with ZeroAvia to build a plane called the HyFlyer II, which has most recently seen the creation of a 19-seat, twin-engine plane called the Dornier 228 that is powered by an environmentally friendly hydrogen-electric power unit.

The plane recently completed its maiden voyage, which saw it take off from the Cotswold Airport in the UK, and then proceed to zoom around for approximately ten minutes before landing again. It did all of this while being fueled by compressed gaseous hydrogen created by an on-site electrolyser.

It should be said that the flight wasn't completely renewably powered, as the Dornier 228 is also fitted with a regular engine that is used to generate extra power during take off, and can be used if there are any safety issues relating to the hydrogen-electric main power unit.

Catch the flight in action below.
