There is a lot of headlines coming out of the latest NPD Group report (North American video game sales statistics), detailing sales that occurred during the September tracking period. Interestingly this also included a couple of big early October releases. The biggest one is that Spider-Man had an absolutely massive launch month. In fact, it was the biggest launch of any exclusive on a PlayStation platform of all time and it's one month performance slotted the game as third in the overall sales this calendar year behind Far Cry 5 and God of War. Another little factoid is that Spider-Man sales was 37% higher than all previous launch months of Spider-Man games combined.
NBA 2K19 also had a brilliant start setting a new record for "launch dollar sales" for any sports game in NPD history. Assassin's Creed Odyssey had a massive first-day (only day tracked in this month's NPD) landing in third while Forza Horizon 4 had a couple days more and managed a franchise launch best. Unsurprisingly, PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware platform (highest September sales since 2014, not counting plug-in consoles). Overall, sales were up 7% year-on-year, largely thanks to increased sales of accessories (game cards in particular).
