Taking Orcs Must Die! to new heights (Gamescom) - Deathtrap Interview with game director Kyle Snyder

We caught up with Robot Entertainment to learn more about the upcoming next instalment into the action-packed shooter and trap defence game, to see how Unreal Engine 5 allows the development team to really scale up the carnage.

"Hello everyone and welcome back to Gamereactor, as you can probably infer by the backdrop we've got here I'm currently with Kyle at the Orcs Must Die!, Deathtrap booth I've just had a chance to play the game, a little taster, actually Rafa behind the camera Was also part of the squad killing some orcs and that was pretty fun So Kyle tell us a little bit about Orcs Must Die!, Deathtrap, you know, what's new about this this sequel I guess is a sequel in many ways, isn't it? It is a sequel We didn't call it Orcs Must Die! 4 because of the changes that we're making so it's not a direct narrative sequel But it is a it is action tower defense, right?
It does play like Orcs Must Die! You lay down traps, you play as a war mage and you're slaughtering hundreds of orcs, right?
But the difference here is that we've added what the audience has been really asking for which is four-player co-op Now it's still playable for solo We do a lot of work to make sure that that that balance works for any team size But it's four-player co-op and then it's also a new set of unique heroes with their own abilities right as well as our old friend Maximilian is playable, too and I heard you mentioning earlier that the idea with it with Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap is obviously that yes The characters are lethal and they are designed to kill the orcs, but it's the traps that do all the heavy lifting So tell me about what you've done here the traps you've incurred You've you've introduced in this game and how they they differ from what we've seen before Yeah So you're playing in larger levels in Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap and that's because I wanted each level to have Multiple solutions for more replayability But that means you're placing more traps down you get more rune coin than ever before and you're just covering the map with traps And I want them to be doing, you know, two to three times more damage than your war mage is doing at the same time Though we've completely revamped combat so that when you are playing the war mage, even though you know They're not doing the same amount of damage as your traps It feels really satisfying as you're hitting the orcs with your abilities and tell me what goes into creating a new Well, I guess an entire cast of characters for this game Yeah So there were some things to look back on and the in the previous games of like what is interesting to add to action tower Defense that's worked into some of it and what I really wanted to avoid because I care about being able to play solo or Co-op is that we didn't to You know put our war mages in a corner where they feel like this is the tank. This is the healer So they have a variety of abilities. Some of them are purely offensive abilities. Some of them are physics based Which is a huge part of orcs must die, right?
So you might be flying up in the sky you might be blowing ten orcs away from you And then some are trap supportive like like we talked about for your traps to deal more damage You could you played a character that allowed you to put an aura around your trap So it buffs their damage by 50% so it's both like looking back at what we've done before and try to incorporate some of that into heroes and then also just looking At like what have we not done?
Right and what would be fun to introduce as this game launches with a whole cast of six new heroes and a previous guy I don't want to talk about Max's kit yet But I will say if you play a lot of orcs must die it is complete reverence to to who he is And you you know you said earlier obviously the the big thing is the online co-op But it's still designed for solo players if they want to play like that What goes into doing that like you know designing a game that can be played alone?
But also designed for a group of players. What's the challenges involved with that? Yeah?
You know ironically in the previous games they were designed and focused around single player and then co-op was just there as an option and What that means is co-op is just straight-up easier There wasn't a lot done to make co-op more challenging and more difficult so you could interpret that as oh This is designed around co-op without people really knowing well that wasn't actually the case so what we've done here is Balanced it around four players, and then turned it down for solo in a lot of different ways so not only Are there health and damage differences on the enemies not only do we make sure that these war mages are all playable as solo heroes?
But there are other differences too like we have added now if you played orcs before you didn't always get an unlimited Break in between every single wave right so if you're playing solo that was a lot more running around quickly trying to memorize What to do no longer the case you get as much time to strategize as you need and you can start the wave whenever you?
Want and we also change the pacing of how the enemies come at you, so if you're playing solo You know you don't need to be in four places at once in order to get it done because we pace them so that you Can move around the map yeah comfortably as you're slaughtering orcs Yeah, now am I right in saying this is the first orcs must die game that has been developed on unreal engine 5 That's right, so we've actually you know you would think we're making Oh sequel to orcs must die 3 It's not that old we've moved to unreal 5 For a lot of reasons it gives us the best tools that we need to make this game But it also meant we we rebuilt the game so While it is action tower defense it is orcs must die like I said the combat got overhauled So there's a lot There's a better game feel than we had in the past and it there's a lot of new stuff here It's definitely feels like a big evolution forwards, and how did it place?
But when orcs must I death trap does eventually debut and we'll talk about the release date and whatnot in a second But when it does what's something you're really excited for players to experience for themselves. I Really want people to get familiar with each war mages kit and pick their favorites It's already been interesting here at gamescom to see just purely visually you know first glance What heroes what kind of players are driven to pick what heroes and we have some one that the audience hasn't really seen yet?
That's been super popular Every group is picked, so I'm really excited about that, and then I'm also really excited to see you know for our veteran players This is a great time to jump into orcs must die right because of these changes, but for our veteran players Like myself I've been on orcs must die for 10 years. I started as a playtester. I played far too much orcs must die It's all that I know there is a level of challenge here if you choose to You know take that on and I can't wait to see how how our Vets react to that yeah, so finally then what's the release plan and what platforms will the game eventually be coming to yeah sure so Release is quarter 125 and it's going to be on PC and Xbox platforms eventually hopefully more platforms But that's what we're doing at launch And then we will continue supporting the game with free maps for the first time ever the maps are actually going to be free And then they'll be paid and free heroes and cosmetics as we go along Awesome, so stay tuned for more on orcs must die death trap otherwise. Yes, book it in your calendars It's going to be coming out in the first quarter of next year And yeah, otherwise for more gamer out to interviews and whatnot stay tuned to your local region Thank you for watching and we'll see on the next one"
