Revolutionising Smart Homes (IFA 2024) Roborock Interview with Nicole Han
We caught up with Roborock product expert Nicole Han to learn more about the range of smart home gadgets that the technology company brought to the major tech fair IFA 2024 in Berlin at the start of September.

"So we've just collected our badges, I hope you can hear me over all the noise in here because they're still really busy building all of the stands.
But our first stop at IFA it will be Roborock because they will be having a presentation in about 15 minutes from now about a range of new products they're going to present."
"So that's what we'll be checking out first.
Hi everybody, we are at the Roborock stand at IFA in Berlin and we'd like to ask you some questions about Roborock.
First of all, congratulations on the 10 year anniversary."
"Could you tell us a bit more about how the company has evolved over the past 10 years and maybe what the future holds?
Thank you.
So Roborock has started 10 years ago."
"By that time it was a part of Xiaomi's ecosystem to make the robotic vacuums.
That is when we announced our products into the market and by 2017 Roborock started to make their own robotic vacuums.
That's when we started our own branding and that's when we started to get known by the international markets and after that we expanded our product lines from not just robotic vacuums but also the home cleaning appliances."
"As you can see at IFA here we also have our washing machines as a lineup and also we have besides robotic vacuums we also have wet and dry vacuum and also handheld vacuum.
In the past 10 years we have grown from an ecosystem of Xiaomi to our own independent brand and also we expanded our product lines from pure robotic vacuum to robotic vacuum plus handheld vacuums plus washing machines."
"So the future is being big.
What kind of trends have you found in the industry that you have added to these new products you're launching now?
So for the future I think what we're trying to do is to make not only robotic vacuums but also all the home appliances that we just mentioned to be smarter to basically make it easy for our users to get their hands off and just enjoy their own life and just forget about cleaning at all."
"So that's the trend and the way that we are going to realize that is to improve our technology, to put customers in our minds, to always think about what our customers want in their life during their cleaning.
So we're a customer-centric company that always puts our users in the head and also we are trying to make it as cost-effective as possible in a good way for our users to make sure that the technologies that we are here demonstrating at IFA will be embraced by as many users as possible at a price with a reasonable price as possible so that more users get to know robotic vacuums or the home appliances from Roborock and they get to enjoy the technology at a lower price."
"Alright, cool.
Why don't we check out some of the new products you've launched?
So we're looking at one of the new products here, the Q-Revo Slim.
Could you tell me a bit more about what's new about this product?
So Q-Revo Slim is our latest product announced at IFA this year and along with it is our Q-Revo Curb."
"So these two are our new products announced at IFA this year.
What's special about Q-Revo Slim, you can tell by the name that it's our thinnest robotic vacuum of our product line so far.
It's only 8.2 centimeters at its thickness."
"So what it does is allowing the robotic vacuum to go underneath all your furnitures at home.
Let's say your bed or your cupboard or closets that are low profile.
This will go underneath easily to pick up the dust and debris and hair bunnies underneath the cupboard that you normally don't know."
"And this robotic vacuum, the reason that it has the thinnest in our lineup is because of the technology called Starsight Autonomous System.
So what Starsight is, is a 3D time of flight technology that allows the robotic vacuum to send off arrays of light lasers to detect the depth information of your home environment."
"So it can let out as many as 20,000 spots to basically detect how deep your environment is and to recognize the furniture and everything and form the map very quickly.
So with that technology, it stands off the beam from back of the robotic vacuum and also at the front of the robotic vacuum, allowing this to not use the technology of LiDAR as we see normally in our product lineup."
"So giving it a thinner body design, allowing this to go underneath lower profile areas and it also has the benefit to recognize objects at a whole lower level comparing to our lighter products.
So Q-Rebel Slim, as we can tell by the name, is slim and it sees objects at a lower level and it can recognize moving objects easier comparing to our lighter products."
"So this is Q-Rebel Slim.
So it's all in the name.
What about the other vacuum cleaner?
It's called the Curve, I think.
Why is it called the Curve and could you tell us a bit more about the specifications?
So as you can see, we have different design aesthetics behind these two products."
"Our previous generation in Roborock is more of an industrial-feeling design and for starting with Q-Rebel Curve, we're trying to give it a sleek look that fits into a different homestyle environment.
So by the first sight, you can see that this is a product that we try to fit into a broader range of lifestyles from our users."
"They have more options, but when it comes to technology, it's also the best.
So what it does, it's still using LiDAR and the technology behind this product is that it has zero tangle issue, meaning that for the users with long hair or with a lot of pet hairs on the ground, this robotic vacuum has the technology of the dual-divide main brush underneath, which you may see later in our behind."
"You can see the brush itself that allows this robotic vacuum to clean the hair as easily as possible.
So zero tangle rates, you don't have to maintain after the robotic vacuum goes around your home cleaning the hairs."
"And it also has the extended side brush, extended side arm to clean the edges.
So these are the features that are also shared by the other product lineups and also right now, this product, it has the highest suction power of our product lineup."
"So yeah, and also the key, key feature of this product is that it has a adapt-lift chassis, which lifts the robotic vacuum as high as one centimeter, allowing it to cross thresholds as high as four centimeters.
So this is the key feature and so far, this is the only product in the industry that has the liftable chassis with three points that lifts as high as 10 centimeters and climb a threshold of over four centimeters."
"So that's a key feature of this product right there.
So slim, curved, but climb higher.
And they both look really nice.
Say I want to buy a new vacuum cleaner, but I can't pick which one."
"Is this one for another target group and that one?
How would I pick which one is right for me?
That's a good question.
I would say go for your feeling by the look of the design."
"That's one way to look at it because they're very different from each other and it fits into different environment.
That might be a more of a soothing, warm home environment.
This will be more of a tacky, industrial feeling of home environment."
"So these two fits into different home environment.
That's the first thing.
And the second thing is depending on how complicated your floor environment is.
For me, if I have a lot of thresholds at home, like in between the hallway and your kitchen or in between your hallway and your bathroom, if there is a threshold that the robotic vacuum needs to climb over that your previous products ran into issue with, I think you would go for curved for that kind of scenario that it can climb everywhere as high as four centimeters, just go around different rooms."
"So I would pick that one if I'm in this kind of situation.
And so this is another new product, the H5.
Could you tell us a bit more about the standout features of this one?
Of course."
"So for the surfaces at home that the robotic vacuum cannot reach, for example, on sofa, in a closet, inside the closet, we provide this solution, the Roborock H5, for cleaning smaller, tighter areas and also some quick cleaning when you have spills on the floor that you don't want a robotic vacuum to go to, then you do it yourself."
"So handheld vacuum, Roborock H5, is also announced this year at IFA.
So it's very intuitive.
It's just like other handheld vacuums that are in the market.
What we have is this 1.5 kilogram light body design, and it has a 60 minutes of runtime battery."
"So you just need to choose a mode and you hit the trigger and you just clean the stuff instantly.
And so this is the product for cleaning just the dry vacuums.
And there are situations when you run into kids that spill dry and wet messes on the floor."
"This is Roborock Flexi when it comes to in use.
So Flexi is a product that we announced earlier this year.
It's cleaning wet and dry messes.
For example, when your kid spills spaghetti with sauces on the ground and you don't want to pick it with the paper, then Flexi is the one to go for."
"So this is for dry vacuum only.
And let me clean this up first.
So Roborock H5, you have different accessories that you can choose to adapt with.
So that is the brush for the surfaces, let's say the gaps between your sofa pads or in a closet corner, you can choose to change to this adaptable hat."
"And also this one is for the bed and sofa brush.
So this is Roborock H5 announced this year at IFA.
And this one, introduced earlier this year, Roborock Flexi, it cleans wet and dry messes at the same time."
"So what you see is that after cleaning, the floor is just very dry, like dry quickly.
And it cleans up the orange juice that I just spilled and also it cleans up the oatmeal at the same time.
So this is very convenient for a family with, let's say, kids or dogs that are playing with messy messes sometimes and you can just use this to pick it up right away."
"Yeah, I can see really good use for families for this version indeed.
And did you have a specific target group in mind with the new H5?
I think H5 is a perfect fit for anyone.
It's targeted at the lower price point and it's also easier to handle because it's only 1.5 kilogram."
"It's very lightweight and it's really easy to use.
So besides vacuum cleaners, you also have a lineup of washing machines and drying machine combos.
Could you tell a bit more about these?
Of course."
"So you can see in these closets here underneath, it's Zeal One that we announced last year.
And above is the Zeal Mini that is the latest and the smallest size of washing machine that we have in European markets."
"And on the right-hand side, which we'll move forward real quick, is the Zealite.
So these three products are underneath the same product family, Zeal.
And what it does, it's a ZealCycle technology."
"It's a special technology from Roborock that allows a gentle dry for our clothes in as short as one hour for Zeal One.
So this technology allows our fabrics to be well cared for when it's being dried."
"And so that's a key technology inside this product.
Besides these, the Zeal One has a washing load of 10 kilogram and also for the drying load is 6 kilogram.
And as for the Zeal Mini, the washing load is 1 kilogram versus the drying load is 0.5 kilogram."
"And all of these products that you see here at Roborock today are able to connect with Roborock app, which allows you to choose as many as 27 programs for drying or pure washing or wash and dry.
And underneath the app interface, you can actually choose a lot of different washing options."
"For example, for washing the underwears or washing a deep cleaning of your clothes that gets really dirty, that all are in the app.
You can even control the washing machine when you're away from home.
So this is a product of washing machines from Roborock."
"And you can move a little bit to the right side.
Later, we'll see a lot of the detailed deep dive of our ZealCycle technology.
