Hotel Barcelona - Hidetaka 'Swery65' Suehiro Commented Gameplay Presentation at IndieDevDay

What better place to introduce an almost-final version of Hotel Barcelona than Barcelona itself? Here Swery plays and explains the game for almost half an hour, giving exclusive insight into its unique features.

Audio transcription

"I will show my new game, Hotel Barcelona, in the Dev Day at Barcelona.
And this is the latest version of Hotel Barcelona.
So, it's a... how can I say?
This is the full version of the game, not the demo version on the floor."

"So you'll see new stuff here.
He may have to use debug mode to beat the bosses, because it's very hard.
So, please cheer him on as he plays the game.
Thank you."

"Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you.
Okay.
Let's play the commentary.
Let's play.
This is the first time anyone will see the opening animations of the game."

"So enjoy.
He's got to balance the sound.
Oh, yeah?
This is a 2.5D slasher action game.
The main character is an American marshal."

"Yay! It's hard to play this game while talking at the same time.
The goal is to use melee and ranged weapons to defeat the enemies.
This is the prologue to the game. It's kind of like a nightmare she's having."

"Oh! He died, but this is just a nightmare, so it's okay.
Can you increase the sound?
No.
So she wakes up from the nightmare, and she's in the hotel now."

"Now he'll show you the opening animation scene of how she got to the hotel.
The sound is coming out.
It's small.
The music is small."

"Can you hear the BGM?
Oh, but it's coming out.
The music is coming out.
Oh, she just woke up.
Fuck."

"Yeah, you're supposed to pick up hitchhikers these days.
Yeah, you're supposed to pick up hitchhikers these days.
Did you understand the subtitles?
Yeah."

"He has a very strong sense of justice.
Okay.
Oh! That's from a movie.
Oh, no."

"Yay! Punish.
So that's the intro to the story, and now she's stuck in the hotel, and she has to kill all the other serial killers in the hotel."

"Now let's get into the gameplay.
You can enter the different missions of the game through the hotel map.
Justine, the main character, has a serial killer who's inside her.
His name's Dr. Carnival, so she talks to him while she's doing the missions."

"This game's very hard, and you're going to die a lot, but don't worry, because there's an easy mode.
The time of day, the weather, and the player size change with every run.
There are three categories of melee weapons."

"You can use knives and sticks, axes, or twin buzzsaws.
For ranged weapons, you can use handguns, shotguns, flamethrowers, and projectiles.
You can also collect different costumes to wear.
He'll start playing now."

"Each stage is based on a different kind of horror movie genre.
And you saw a poster for one right now.
All those posters were drawn by different famous artists in Japan.
There are also NPCs who say very horror-esque lines, but you can't kill them."

"You can only kill the enemies.
You can tell they're enemies because they have life gauges on top of them.
You can alternate between using melee and ranged weapons however you want.
When you shoot the gun, it has auto-aim."

"You can also guard.
You can also guard while moving.
But you have a limited amount of stamina, and he just ran out of his stamina.
Heavy attacks also consume stamina."

"There are multiple doors at the end of each area, and each door has a different buff attached to it.
You have to choose which one to take.
The only way to restore HP in this game is through a buff on a door, so green doors are really valuable.
So he'll take the door to restore his HP."

"You have to go through four doors in total to reach the boss of each stage.
Some areas have missions in them, and if you complete the mission in that area, you'll get a treasure chest.
You might die here.
When you open treasure chests, you can get money from the chests, and some of them also have special costumes in them."

"The real game starts after you die, so he's going to die on purpose here.
You don't need to worry about dying in this game. It's important to die.
He'll skip through the story scene so we can get back to the gameplay.
Every time you die, you go back to the hotel, and sometimes there's some dialogue."

"She has a monster in her closet.
Accessing the closet lets you go to the skill tree, where you can unlock different skills and abilities.
There will also be conversation selections, like the second selection you see up there.
So this is the skill tree."

"He's going to unlock the first one, which unlocks his special attack. They're called Carnival Awakenings.
That one's free.
All the other skills require materials that you collect, and you can see how much he has on the left side of the screen.
He'll go with the parry first. It makes sense."

"Aerial dodge is also really important. It lets you dodge while you're in midair.
Being able to dodge in midair is really useful.
He's out of materials.
He was only able to unlock two at this point."

"There are also NPCs in the hotel, so you can explore the hotel and talk to different characters.
But we'll focus on the action for now.
Accessing the mirror lets you talk to Dr. Carnival, the serial killer who's inside you.
He'll go back to the same stage."

"The blue rooms that you see there, that's the path he took last time.
The time of day has changed, and the weather has also changed.
Every time you start a new run, all the materials you didn't lose will be lost.
This poster was drawn by the artist for the King of Fighters series."

"This is the main system for this game, the slasher phantom system.
The game records everything you did on your previous run, and when you go on a new run, you'll have a phantom with you who's doing the same things that you did last time.
So that red phantom is doing the exact same thing that he did on his previous run."

"So it's a full recording, there's no AI, so it sometimes will attack in weird places.
But the phantom does damage to enemies, and it can also take aggro from the enemies.
So it can be very useful.
By unlocking things in the skill tree, you can have up to four phantoms active at once."

"So it's a lot easier to kill the enemies now.
The blue door is the door that he took last time.
If he takes a different door now, he'll lose his phantom.
So deciding whether to keep the phantom, or to go for a better buff, is a big choice you have to make all throughout the game."

"So he'll go with the phantom, because it has a good buff on that door.
Now he's back at the area where he died.
The phantom is doing weird things now, because he was trying to complete the special mission.
So the idea behind this system is to encourage the phantom to do weird things, because it's easier to kill the phantom."

"But if you do that, it'll be hard for the phantom to kill you in the next round.
Let's try dying again in the next area.
On the top right, you see a marker that says, Casino? There's a door to the casino in this area."

"Going to the casino will let you upgrade your weapons.
The ranger will sell weapons to you, and the gambler will let you upgrade them.
He probably can't buy anything, because he has no money.
Maybe he can buy that one."

"If you have a key, you can open the treasure chest here.
If you win the gambling game, it lets you enhance your weapon.
Left or right?
Right?
Right."

"Oh, thank you! Wow, gracias! When you win, you get another chance to try again.
And if you lose, you quit.
Which one?
Left or right?
Left?
Left? Okay, I'm going to try."

"Whoa! Really?
You're really powerful.
Now he's going to be too strong.
Okay, okay. One more try.
Which one?
Left or right?
Right?
Right?
No! Now he'll be sent out of the room."

"The gun's really strong now, so it'll be useful for the boss.
You can use the right stick to look around the map.
Ah, I'm going to die! After you die twice, you can start again from the beginning of the stage without going back to the hotel."

"Whenever you retry, you always get to go to the hotel.
Oh, there's a skill tree.
He used too much money in the casino, so he can't unlock any skills.
Oh no."

"Strategy.
Now, the time of day is morning, the weather is rainy, and the player size is tiny.
He'll change to the axe now.
Let's try again."

"There was a lot of material, but he didn't have any money.
This movie is called Slasher Slugger.
Ah, he's gotten smaller.
Yeah, so tiny."

"So his size is very small this time.
There are three different sizes. Small, normal, and giant.
And when you're giant, you have very long range on your attacks.
The axe is a slower weapon, but if you're very precise with your attacks, it can do a lot of damage."

"There are some really cool attack animations in this game.
The gun is really powerful.
Plus three now.
He'll try to get as far as he can go."

"The gun is so powerful that he's having a really easy time.
As you can see, the casino is on this stage as well, but he doesn't want to spend any more money this time.
Those big enemies are very powerful, but if you kill one, it will completely fill up your blood gauge.
The more that skull on the bottom of the screen fills up, the more powerful you become."

"Next time, he's going to try and defeat the boss.
He's giant size.
He's really big now.
You're also faster when you're giant size."

"He's really big now.
He's really big now.
He's really big now.
He's really big now.
He's really big now."

"Most of his attacks, the range is so wide that he can hit all the enemies at once.
He'll try to get to the boss as quickly as possible.
The more the skull fills up, the higher your crit rate becomes, and the less stamina you consume from attacks.
It's possible to speed through the stage without killing any enemies, but if you do that, you don't get any materials, so it becomes very hard to upgrade your skills."

"He's ignoring the enemies now because he wants to show you the boss.
He's never gotten this far yet, so he has no more phantoms with him.
He just did an aerial dodge.
Aerial dodge. It's strong, isn't it?
It's hard to use this controller."

"Now let's fight the boss and go to Q&A.
After he finishes the boss, we'll do the Q&A.
This animation was created by Nanjo Saho, a Japanese animator.
She's worked on scenes for the Chainsaw anime, as well as music videos for the band Yoasobi."

"Hey, hey.
Don't do that.
Nice.
Oh, no.
Oh, no."

"Oh, no.
It's really hard for him to parry. He doesn't have the energy for it.
He parried the boss.
He's out of stamina."

"Almost there. Not bad for feeling another way out. Not bad at all.
He died."
