There are a lot of manufacturers, a lot of companies out there that are actively trying to sort of reintroduce the idea of tablets into our lives."
"That might be companies such as Daylight that has patented a very special LCD display that means that it basically produces less blue light in order to damage our irises and messes with our circadian rhythms.
But it also, it's just companies like Remarkable that aren't really, they haven't started doing it, they've already done it."
"By basically serving up a handwriting feel through this tablet form factor, that means that it has become one of the preferred sort of digital anachronisms for a lot of people that wants the convenience of something that is digital and modern, but wants the retention, the refocus on information and the way that you jot down your thoughts on paper."
"So how do you combine that?
Well you make a handwriting tablet and that's what Remarkable has done for years and they've done that very well.
They are incredibly respected, we've had that, the newest regular Remarkable tablet here on the show I think a year back and it is completely like, it was a complete eye-opener to see the way that that tablet, through a whole host of different features, managed to capture the concept of handwriting through a digital lens."
"Now though, they've put out the Remarkable Pro, which I have here.
This is the folio keyboard, I should say right off the bat.
These come in different finishes with different materials depending on what you want.
Folio means that it's a keyboard, meaning that if you wanted to type as well as write then you could, but it adds a hefty extra price to the tablet and one could easily argue that the keyboard itself is something that you would use over on a regular laptop and as an addition to a laptop, this is for handwriting, meaning that you could purchase the regular old cover if you wanted to, which it basically is a book style leather cover."
"Now, when you open the Remarkable Pro, you are prompted for a passcode and I have mine here and I have notes here.
For instance, I have taken review notes for Starfield Shattered Space, I believe was the last one I did and well, this is what it looks like and it's very difficult to demo here on camera how this feels, but it's a collection of different things."
"This is the canvas color display because yes, the Remarkable Pro primarily distinguishes itself from the cheaper sibling by offering a color display.
That is not something that I have had a lot of experience with yet, but obviously it means that books, if you read books for instance, with color illustrations, well those are now within reach and I know that what a lot of you are thinking, comic books, as a comic book reader, man, that is absolutely, that's spot on there."
"Now there isn't really a comic book store here, meaning that you're going to have to buy them, download them as PDFs and transfer them, but the app experience within like a smartphone or computer works very well.
So I have no real issues there."
"Now with the canvas color display, there's a couple of different things.
One, there's a textured finish on the Remarkable, which means that it's trying on a physical level to emulate the tactile resistance of writing on paper.
I don't know if this picks up, but you can feel that mostly through sound."
"I know, it's very impressive, I hope that that sound picks up, but when you're using it actively, a lot of that stuff really matters, man.
It really does.
It's custom built, this textured surface by Remarkable, and it's very nice with the Marker Plus as well, because apart from just offering this writing experience, which is awesome, with custom tips, if that's what you want, there is a eraser on here."
"You know how people have asked Apple to do for the Apple Pencil for freaking years?
Well, it is right here, and it works extremely well.
It recognizes it immediately and erases.
Now there are different ways of erasing, there's also circle to erase, there are various different ways in which to do this properly."
"Now I should stress that, again, if you're looking for an anachronism, meaning that you need something to remind you of how things used to be, well, this works very well.
I have found it to be much better for information retention than if I have a thought and I jot it down, I tend to remember it better if I do the physical act of handwriting, even though then my handwriting has become terrible over like two decades almost of just plainly using keyboards."
"Apart from that, though, I find that there is such a good relation between what I do here and what I can pull down to my other platforms that it's so nice as an addition to a digital workflow.
So for instance, if I do handwritten notes, I just transfer them into my, I have a bookkeeping kind of program that we use here for work."
"And I have, I just have my notes there as PDFs where I can edit them as well and send them back to the remarkable.
All of this is just really cool.
People say that it's expensive."
"That is definitely the case.
This is an expensive, expensive product, particularly this pro one, and particularly if you also want the pen.
But this is well made in a way that few other gadgets that we've had here on the show for years have been well made."
"And the way that it works is so seamless with the way that you think that it's very hard for me to not just wholly recommend it to you regardless of price.
