Jumping harmonically around a beautiful stage - Symphonia Interview

Symphonia is a beautiful 2D platformer that started as a university project and is now coming out as a full game published by Headup Games. Here, game designer Martin Lepetre from Sunny Peak tells us all about it ahead of its imminent release.

"Hi Gamereactor friends, I'm at the Crowded in the Area at Gamescom 2024 as I'm looking at one of those indie stories that we love which is that you guys started with this game, with Symphonia at school as a project, as a finance project and now you are being published by Head Up Games and the game looks really really good so what can you tell us about this sort of beautiful indie story?
Yeah, thank you very much Just as you said, we started as a student project in Paris we wanted to do more about the game because it was a very small scale for a student project, of course so we pitched the idea to many publishers and we had the opportunity to pitch the idea to Head Up through a connection of us so we pitched the idea, they liked it and thanks to them we are here at Gamescom just like last year and hopefully we will launch at the end of this year And of course it sets it on the title already Symphonia has to do with music and you guys are into music so what's the sort of link to music here?
Yeah, Symphonia is a 2D platformer game but we have a strong connection to music especially orchestra music At first we wanted to keep the gameplay idea to have a violinist that evolves around an orchestra environment and yeah, we implemented the idea we followed that idea and now we have the chance to even record all the soundtracks with real orchestra music Okay, and now tell me about the game itself So what do you do with it?
Is it like a Metroidvania sort of deal with platforms and beautiful environments hand-drawn environments?
Yeah, so this is mainly a 2D platformer game so there is not that much Metroidvania components so yeah, it's mainly there is just a little bit of back and forth to just get some collectibles because you have new abilities but it's very minimal the main goal of the game is to just evolve around many levels, different levels with different backgrounds etc related to music of course music instruments and orchestra industry And it looks really really nice as I said so what can you tell me about the art the artists you guys have and sort of the visual aspect of Symphonia?
Yeah, thank you very much So I'm not a 2D artist on the project but I can say that we had many many amazing artists working on the game we were at peak at six artists we have also one amazing 2D animator that took care of all the animation for the main character and all the other characters we wanted to have for the art we wanted to have a lot of perspective and parallax in the levels that feels alive, that feels dense that you can see there are some things that's happening in the background that's mechanics that's going around etc so we hope that we implemented this idea well for the public What makes the story and the message that you want to send with this game special for both those that are into music and those that are not much into music?
We wanted at first and before all to just people to enjoy it people to enjoy the game and the music because we had a lot of fun to develop the game and to think about the music we had a lot of composers as well that took care of the composition before the orchestra took care of them and yeah the message yeah around the message we wanted also to not have a combat system in the game we wanted only to have the final main character only against the environment it's a man versus everything around and you told me release is around the corner on which platforms and what is the exact date for Symphonia?
Yeah release is around the corner we plan to release around November, December of this year anyway it's before 2025 and we plan to release simultaneously on PC, Xbox, Playstation and also Switch as well and for that I guess for multi-platform release you got help from Head Up Games?
Yeah we got help from Head Up Games with the Playstation and Xbox portage but we took care of the Switch version ourselves and of course being this a school project at first this is your very first game but you guys now have a studio can we expect more from you in the future?
Yeah we plan something from here because we are nearly done with the game so we are just polishing, back fixing at this point we plan something else for the future but it's very very early for the moment so I cannot tell more now Thank you so much for your time Martin, enjoy the show! Thank you very much, enjoy Gamescom!"
