Learning all about Neighbors: Suburban Warfare with Invisible Walls, or how to vent about IRL pesky residents

One of our highlights at Gamescom was when we played Neighbors and got to talk with Invisible Walls co-founders Sebastian Hurup Bevensee and David Jean Heldager, but we couldn't tell you about it until today.

Audio transcription

"Hi Gamereactor friends, I'm at Gamescom 2024 and I'm here talking with some neighbors because you guys are based in Denmark, same as we are, our headquarters so it's really nice to talk to neighbors but sometimes neighbors are not so nice and I I do love the premise of your game I sometimes feel like doing what you can do here so what can you tell us about that main premise. So the whole premise for neighbors is that that exact feeling that you are sort of tapping into that that the neighbor is like over cutting that branch or is trimming your head a little bit too much or is just playing music a little bit too loud on a Sunday morning or barbecue is a little smelly in that way and you just really want to take that out on them and destroy going into them and just wrecking their entire house and all of their household. Yeah exactly so so it's like a PvP game it's a first-person arena brawler and you have your own house with friends and then you just need to barricade your own house make sure you you don't get intruders in by trapping your house Home Alone style and then you just wanna go and wreck your opponent's house. It's a little bit like Fortnite meets God Simulator meets Home Alone in a way I played for a brief while I enjoyed it. What can you tell us about the the things that you can do so you can barricade your house but then you have some sort of you know like crafting some economy to it so how does that work? There is a so throughout the game there's a economy that goes continually gradually going faster and faster because we want the game to progress and go out go like be more and more violent and more and more active but otherwise then going and doing actions like killing your neighbors you're getting money building down like we have a we have like a mechanic where you can plunk down oil turrets that generates money as well but of course you have to defend them as well so we have like these RTS elements that always is generating money and and then of course doing the action that we want to do is if you're a healer and you're healing someone you're getting rewards for healing and you're earning money by healing the Doreen which is a brawler and making sure that she's killing then you are getting rewarded for that and getting money and then you can use it to buy new things. Then we have upgrades in the shops so there's shops in the house some of them focus on offense some of them focus on defense some on support and then during the game you want to fight over the resources that you want to bring home to your house and when you have those resources you can upgrade the shops and get more and more crazy and silly items like everything from mobs, vacuum cleaners, baseball bats, pop guns, orange cannons. You gotta love the brawling grandma so that was my character I enjoyed her so you mentioned before is it only going to be 2v2 or are you guys considering like you know why there are bigger families? Our game is not a like specifically because our last game first I struggle was dedicated server and we quite it's so we didn't want to go that route so now it's like your players host their own games they set their own parameters so if you want to do a 2v2 3v3 or 4v4 they can do that themselves and they can tweak all the things themselves and the servers will just go as long as they want to play the game so that's the that's the premise for the game. If they want to play different game modes they decide it's all up to the players. Currently the max support is 4v4 because it is listen server so you like it depends on your machines power of course but we are trying to optimize it as much as possible and let's see for release. You mentioned a bunch of things that are really crazy already including both characters and items and the things you can do so so share a bit more on that I I love the seagull for example so tell us what was the craziest thing you've seen being doing here? It has to be the seagull I think a mind control station for the seagull we have these days where we where we actually allow our own employees to do whatever they like for the game so we have like entire days where like just jam whatever mechanic and this was one of them one of our programmers thought it was a good idea to mind control a seagull and do bird poopings down on players. We really love the if you play Call of Duty 2 like that's this very famous mission. Remote."

"Yeah exactly you're playing the C-130 so of course for us is a seagull 130 that you're so your mind controlling and shooting bird poop down on your friends.
You can break down the barricades then you can rebuild them and then protect them when the night comes there's this puppy so beware the dog right? Yes that's a Leeloy that's actually my own dog that we put in I guess that's the that's the benefits of working in games you can put your own own things in your own animals Can you pet them? Yes yes. Because I think I hit one. Well if you shouldn't hit that's my dog so I really when I they send me the team they send me videos of putting her on catapult and launching her out and beating her."

"Exactly so that was the so it's very I love having her but I seeing her getting beaten up every day is really really painful. Sounds like sorry about that okay okay so I enjoyed it already so what was the status of the game and which platforms are you planning to release on and what's the release window yeah so the release date is to be announced we can't really talk about a current data but it we've been working on it for like three years so we are pretty far in development so it's I say coming soon would not be a wrong thing to say yeah exactly so we're going for for PC first and then after that we'll have to see what we can what we can come out on of course we have experience with with making games for consoles PlayStation and Xbox so I think it's a very very good opportunity this this game calls for for couch gaming as well or with your controller it's casual right so yeah what sort of model are you thinking about is it going to be early access first is it going to be free to play is it going to be full release it's a premium full release for release there will be so there's no so it's not a like we in the beginning things it was we were looking at the free-to-play model but you feel like it's it is a little predatory so this is we really fought hard this is what we won't go there will be like some micro to take the cons cosmetics and stuff for that but that's all we're gonna do every character is unlocked through progression all the how all the things that's like normally impacting gameplay that's all just normally progression I'm looking forward to beating up my neighbors and setting some traps in my own place so that was interesting I really love it it looks good too and the lighting looks fantastic the colors so thank you so much for your time and good luck with the parade enjoy the show thank you so much thank you you"
