GRTV News - PlayStation Productions announces Horizon: Zero Dawn movie

The live-action flick will tell Aloy's origin story once again.

Audio transcription

"Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of GRTV News. Today we're going to be talking about CES. For the main reason that a lot of announcements were made last night. There was the full proper unveiling of the RTX 50 series graphics cards, the new stuff from AMD, lots of big tech stuff. But today we're going to be talking about PlayStation instead. Because, surprisingly in many ways, PlayStation Productions had a lot to announce last night. And, well there is an upcoming Helldivers movie in the works, which is exciting but we don't have much more information about it just yet. There's a Ghost of Tsushima anime in the works which is coming from the anime studio that made the Star Wars Visions The Duel episode. And also, The Last of Us Season 2 will debut on Macs in April. The thing that really caught my attention is about Horizon Zero Dawn. So let's dive on in again and see what's happening. So yes, the Uncharted studio is making a Horizon Zero Dawn movie."

"We doubt Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg will be in this one though. I think Mark Wahlberg would play a fantastic Aloy for that matter. But anyway, 6 months have gone since rumours about Netflix cancelling the TV series based on Horizon Zero Dawn making the arounds. PlayStation hasn't said much about it but basically confirmed it tonight. But not by outright saying it, but by announcing that Columbia Pictures is making a movie based on Horizon Zero Dawn during Sony's CES press conference. Asad Kizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, said that they are at the early stages of developing, which means we'll have to wait a while to see the final product, if it actually makes it to the finish line this time. A fascinating thing about the announcement is that it'll be an adaptation of the first game so it'll seemingly tell Aloy's origin story just like we know it. Netflix's TV series is apparently meant to tell a completely new story in the universe but it sounds like PlayStation Productions have decided to go for an easier solution with this movie. Who should play Aloy in the movie? Rosa Leslie might be too old these days. And which studio do you want to make the special effects? Now, Horizon getting adapted into a live action film isn't something that surprises me. I thought it would be coming eventually. But what does surprise me is how they're doing it now. Because we talked a lot in the last few months and weeks I guess of 2024 about Horizon fatigue. About how PlayStation and Guerrilla have thrown so much Horizon at us that I think people are starting to feel a little bit overwhelmed by it and a little bit sort of tired by it. And this to me doesn't help anyone. Because while I have no doubt this film will be really exciting, within less than a decade period I personally have played Horizon Zero Dawn on PlayStation 4 when it recently arrived."

"Horizon Zero Dawn remastered briefly when it came out near last stages of last year.
Lego Horizon Adventures on PlayStation 5 last year. And now I'm supposed to get excited about Horizon Zero Dawn movie as well. Telling the exact same story again. Now yes, you have to add to that as well Horizon Forbidden West which is a different story but it's also another Horizon product. And Horizon Call of the Mountain the VR game which seemingly no one played because of it being on PSVR 2. But the point I'm trying to make is that the thing that really excited me about the Netflix show was that it was going to tell a new story in Horizon. Because I think Horizon is a really compelling idea. It's just for some reason we keep getting told the exact same story. And it's not like this is the exact same story being told over, being adapted and given to us in different versions over like 40 years or something. This has been less than a 10 year period. I think Horizon Zero Dawn launched in 2016 or something. So, it might be even later than that, it might be 2018, I can't remember. But it wasn't that long ago, put it that way. And now we've got this film coming out. So if you're one of the people who haven't again played Horizon Zero Dawn when it originally came out on PlayStation 4 or checked out the remastered version last year or maybe checked out the Lego version instead, then the good news is that probably in sort of like, you know, 2027 or something like that, probably around when Guerrilla has the next Horizon game ready, like brand new instalment to the series, you'll be able to hop to the cinemas and watch Aloy's adventure all over again. As you can tell, I'm less than enthusiastic about it right now, but maybe you are. So if you are, let us know in the comments below about what you think about this announcement. And that also is about the other CES stuff from Sony, you know, which one excites you the most? The Return of the Last of Us, the Ghost of Tsushima anime, the Horizon movie, or probably, if I had to put my money on it, the Helldivers movie. But yeah, tell us all about it in the comments below, otherwise I'll see you all on the next episode of GRTV News tomorrow. Take care, everyone."
