GRTV News - 98% of the developer's working on the next Battlefield are new to the series

It looks like we could be in store for a very fresh take on the shooter series.

Audio transcription

"Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of GRTV News. Today we're going to start the week by talking a little bit about Battlefield. There's a new Battlefield that supposedly, we've heard rumours anyway, that supposedly will be aiming to coming out later this year. So we're probably looking at sort of the October, November time when the big AAA shooters tend to debut. And that game has been in development for a long time, we've heard various different reports and rumours throughout that development process that EA is very focused on getting the series back on track after a few sort of wobbly efforts that sort of came to the, reached their pinnacle should we say, with Battlefield 2042, which debuted back in 2021 I want to say, recently. But the point is that the new Battlefield game is in development, it's been in development for a long time, we're expecting to see more of it later this year. But it seems like it's being handled by a bunch of people that aren't very familiar with Battlefield, which is quite surprising. So Battlefield development dominated by new staff, 98% lack experience with previous titles in the franchise, a new dawn filled with major changes awaits the classic first person shooter. So according to a former Battlefield developer, approximately 98% of the team working on the next Battlefield game has no prior experience with earlier titles in the series. This situation has arisen due to Electronic Arts extensive internal restructuring following several less successful game launches. On Blue Sky the former developer shared the following. So if you're a Battlefield fan, temp your expectations. This is a new era of the game made by a completely new group of people following a new philosophy. Whether that's good or bad depends on your personal outlook. The original leadership at DICE has already left the company and EA has recruited individuals previously involved with Call of Duty to restructure and revitalise the franchise for a modern audience. So Battlefield is currently being developed by four different studios, DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive, in an effort to replicate the model that has made Call of Duty so successful. Furthermore, rumours suggest the game will feature a modern setting with several classic game modes, aiming to reconnect with Battlefield's roots, including support for up to 64 simultaneous players and hyper-realistic destruction. The question now is whether the reported lack of experience with the series will have a positive or negative effect. Battlefield has faced criticism in recent years for straying away from many of the elements that originally made the series unique. So what do you think?
What are your hopes with Battlefield? And that's the comment there from the ex-Battlefield developer."

"Now, I'm not exactly surprised by this. Obviously, people aren't going to work on a franchise eternally. People move on and try different things in their careers. So it's not a huge surprise that the new Battlefield is being made by people who are less familiar with Battlefield as a franchise. What is quite surprising is the number. 98% means that pretty much every developer that was working on this game has never worked on a Battlefield game before, meaning we are probably going to see a very different Battlefield in its sort of intricate elements. It will still be Battlefield as you know it, on a grand macro scale, because Battlefield is, you know, you can sort of boil it down to a few key points. Big maps, chaotic destruction, huge team play, right? That's sort of like the three things that Battlefield does compared to Call of Duty, which is much more concise, fast-paced action, smaller team sizes and stuff like that. So I don't think we're going to be seeing a huge change in that regard, but hopefully by changing the team so significantly it does mean that we're going to see a slightly fresher Battlefield take. I think that's one thing that Battlefield has struggled with recently is that it's just offered the same thing up time and time again and I think after 20 years or whatever people are starting to expect a bit more from it maybe. The one thing I will also say about it is that, you know, in this piece that Marcus wrote here he mentions that the game will have had a modding setting with several classic game modes looking to reconnect with Battlefield's roots. And while the classic game mode didn't surprise me, you know, conquest, rush, those sort of things, the modding setting, I've always found Battlefield's modding settings to be a little bit hit or miss. I think Battlefield 3 was fantastic, 4 was pretty solid, but I also think that some of the other modding games they've done haven't been particularly fantastic themselves."

"They've been okay. I think Battlefield is at its best actually in sort of historical war settings. I think the best Battlefield game that they've done in at least recent memory was probably Battlefield 1. So it's interesting, but we'll see how it all comes out. I mean, again, this game is rumoured to be coming out later this year. We haven't got an official release date or anything like that, but again it's rumoured to be coming out later this year, so if that is the case we'll probably start hearing more about it relatively soon, because obviously EA is going to want to ramp up the marketing for this one, make sure that people are very, very aware that there's a new Battlefield coming out in 2025 to compete with Call of Duty. So stay tuned for more on this no doubt, and otherwise, yeah, I'll be back now tomorrow for the next GLTV Newsroom, so I hope you enjoy Monday and I'll see you all on the next one. Take care everyone."
