Asus ProArt P16 H7606 (Quick Look) - Creativity Unrivalled

This AI-backed laptop is designed to be a creativity powerhouse all while using the latest components to make it a productivity titan too.

Audio transcription

"Hello everyone and welcome to another Gamereactor Quick Look.
This is the Asus ProArt P16 H7606.
No idea why that last bit has to get on there because Apple usually doesn't need to call it anything other than the new or this year's MacBook Pro 14 or 16, but H7606 it is."

"But what you need to know is that this is actually a MacBook Pro 16 competitor from Asus.
And while I think a lot of PC manufacturers were taken aback by the initial launch of the M1 and the M1 Pro and M1 Max, CPU or SoCs from Apple that could combine good competitive performance in creative benchmarks and pursuits while also maintaining fantastic battery life and a magnificent screen, plus all the other things that it can do, PC manufacturers like Asus have been trying to catch up and they are getting there."

"The P16 is one of the better examples that I've seen, but there is still a little bit to go as we'll get to.
Now, first and foremost, it is like a 16-inch MacBook Pro, if not like lighter, thinner, it is actually very light and thin."

"There are these rubber standoffs here at the bottom, but still, you really can't say that you are paying a big weight or size toll to get this much productivity power in here.
So that is really cool.
Asus, with their ProArt machines, have known this for a while, they actually do very well in gaming laptops as well as slimming down these chassis, even when you're not saving on cooling, thermals, that kind of stuff."

"So that is really good.
And the good news continue with sort of the fundamentals.
It is a really strong keyboard here, anchored by really nice upward-firing dual speakers, which work very well."

"You have a big, fancy trackpad here, which works fantastically, I think it's frosted glass as well, with the little dial built in, which has specific, well, versatile functionality in, for instance, the Adobe Suite.
For instance, you can use it as a zoom wheel, there's a bunch of different, or scrubbing timelines for instance, that stuff."

"Really cool to have directly built in like a hardware feature.
This screen is also pretty amazing, I should say, just right off the bat.
It is a 16-inch, 3K, weird, but, you know, fine, 3K, 120Hz OLED touchscreen.
That means, yes, it is fully touch-enabled, yes, it is Kalman verified, yes, it covers way more than 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, it is verified by several different sources, as with all things ProArt, and again, 3K, 120Hz OLED, that's pretty great."

"So, if you're watching movies, it'll be fantastic, if you're playing games, that'll be fantastic, and also for creative work, it is probably going to be way more color-accurate and smooth than most of your semi-professional monitors out there, so that is good.
Inside, as you can probably see on the stickers right here, you get a competent combination of an AMD Ryzen AI9-HX370 alongside a GeForce RTX 5070 with 8GB of GDDR6 RAM."

"You also have an option, as far as I could tell, for a 5090, which is freaking insane.
That is combined with 64GB of LPDDR5 RAM alongside a 2TB G4 SSD, PCIe SSD.
So that is some pretty competent specifications in a chassis that is very slim, and you're probably wondering already now, are there, well, compromises, and yes, there are."

"We saw in our own thermal testing, which Kim helped me do, that the CPU stabilizes at around 71-72 degrees under stress.
There is no evidence of thermal throttling, but this laptop does get warm, and the GPU is a little bit lower than that, so you might think, well, it's better than, you know, hovering around the 90-degree mark with obvious signs of thermal throttling, and that is true."

"It does seem like that the cooling solution that is in here does work, but the point is that it is also a little bit noisy, I would say.
We measured one test, which is around 42 decibels on full load.
It has a pleasant noise profile without, like, high-frequency coil whines, but it is a little bit unpredictable, and there is one big thing, battery life."

"We got, with regular use, meaning that it is a mix of regular, I think we're using the Arc browser, which might be a little bit more taxing than using Microsoft Edge, but we used the Arc browser for regular office work, and we got less than six hours, and heavy use, such as, like, something like gaming, for instance, and we did put it through its gaming paces."

"We got around an hour's worth.
Now, that is not as good as a MacBook Pro 16, and that is perhaps the biggest failing is that it does get a little hot, it does get a little loud, it does not last as long as you probably would, because with regular office work with a laptop like this, I probably would have preferred a bit of a boxier build, even, if you could have given me a 20% bigger battery and perhaps eight, nine hours of regular office work on a single charge."

"I think that would have been better.
One could argue that if you're gaming or if you're doing heavy creative work, you would be plugged into a wall.
I think that's fair, but, like, sub-six hours, to me, is a little bit of a disappointment, but still, read our full review, where there are benchmark results and a lot more sort of ingrained testing, so for much more, see you on the next one."
