GRTV News - Cyberpunk 2077 has shifted 35 million copies

And we've been given an update on what not to expect from The Witcher 4.

Audio transcription

"Hello everyone and welcome back to another GRTV News.
Today we're going to be touching on the various different CD Projekt Red news pieces that took place over yesterday evening I guess.
The big sort of third quarter financial report for the Polish developer came out and it revealed a good bunch of different bits of information about how CD Projekt is currently working on things."

"We've got information about how Cyberpunk 2077 is selling, about the Witcher 4 when we won't next see it.
I don't know what a weird way to phrase that but yes.
And also as well how the development teams are structured right now because it's always interesting to follow that because it's not something that a lot of developers share that information."

"Like how they're using their employees but anyway let's dive on in.
So yes first of all we have Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 35 million copies.
CD Projekt Red's latest game is selling faster than the Witcher 3 World Hunt.
Somewhat surprisingly really actually when you think about it but anyway."

"It's worth repeating that Cyberpunk 2077 had a fairly rough launch.
Sure many loved the game but also became famous for some serious technical issues.
CD Projekt Red has kept fixing and improving the game however so millions of sceptics have been convinced to buy it through the years.
And I mean millions because CD Projekt reveals that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 35 million copies since its launch in December 2020."

"This means that it sold 5 million the last year as it has almost been exactly one year since we were told the game has achieved 30 million.
The Witcher 3 World Hunt needed 6 years to reach 30 million so Cyberpunk 2077 is selling faster.
The former has surpassed 60 million now though so it would be interesting to see if Cyberpunk 2077 will be able to surpass that before the Witcher 4 comes out."

"So there's that.
The other thing to note if we do a quick hop and skip and jump actually I should have had this prepared but I didn't.
Is this which we won't go through this full news piece here.
We'll just sort of gloss over it but yes The Witcher 4 won't be shown at the Game Awards 2025."

"So while it was announced last year at the Game Awards through that sort of cinematic trailer.
We shouldn't be expecting another example this year.
So don't look to the Game Awards this year for any information from CD Projekt Red about The Witcher 4 because it won't be coming.
And I think that's fair because with a game of that sort of scale and standard it's not going to be launched in 2026."

"If it launches in 2027 it'd be probably somewhat surprising as well so it's a while away.
So don't expect to see that then.
But anyway I wanted to hop over here real quick as well.
So this is one of the presentations that CD Projekt Red put out in regards to their financial report."

"And it's always fascinating because again this is where you can see how they assign their developers.
So a couple of things worth note.
July 31st so at the end of the summer or midsummer CD Projekt Red employed 799 developers.
Now it employs 851."

"So it's increased its development count or developer count sorry by 52 in that time.
Now majority of the staff were working on The Witcher 4 anyway in the summer.
There's now a couple more people working on it.
But yeah still the majority of the focus of CD Projekt Red is on The Witcher 4."

"Which means well that's good news really.
The other thing worth noting though is this.
So 116 developers working on Cyberpunk 2 in the summer.
Now there's 135."

"So what this says to me is that this game Witcher 4 is in active development.
It's in like full scale production.
Whereas Cyberpunk 2 is probably in pre-development.
What's the word for it?
I can't remember."

"It's probably going through all the technical stuff that they need to do.
Before they can launch into full scale development.
Which will happen most likely once this is done.
Or alternatively and this is the interesting thing about the CD Projekt Red setup."

"Is that once it gets towards the end of development of Witcher 4.
They'll probably start transferring people from this to this.
So you'll see in good time you'll see this block here start shrinking.
And this block here start growing."

"Even though The Witcher 4 won't be out.
So that's quite interesting there.
Because it shows that they have a good pipeline of stuff coming down the line.
Otherwise we have Sirius which is still very early on in it's preparation phases."

"We don't really know a whole lot about Sirius yet.
Or Hadar as well.
Both of which haven't really changed much.
Because the focus of CD Projekt Red is The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2."

"And then shared services.
That can be a variety of different things.
Updates anything like that.
So continuing to patch and fix up existing games and stuff like that."

"Hasn't really changed.
They've just generally speaking hired more people.
Probably to increase the production capabilities of Cyberpunk 2.
But also just to support these other projects a little bit better."

"As well as the other category here.
So yeah.
A couple of interesting things of note there.
First of all CD Projekt Red.
It's very clear that their games."

"They don't necessarily.
In a way they're like Remedy.
Although granted on completely different scales and commercial success sizes.
They don't need to come out of the gate and sell 15 million copies of a game."

"Knowing that they probably won't sell very well beyond that.
CD Projekt Red games have really really good legs.
You know when you look at Cyberpunk again.
Selling 5 million copies in the last year."

"The game launched in 2020.
And it sold 5 million copies over the last year.
There's a lot of games this year.
A lot of brand new AAA titles that won't have got a sniff at 5 million sold copies."

"So it shows just how much of a stopping power these games have.
And it also means that you probably shouldn't be worried about the scale of the games.
That they're going to be cooking up with The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
Because if The Witcher 4 is continuing to sell like hotcakes."

"And it is.
And Cyberpunk 2077 is still continuing to sell like hotcakes.
Then it's very clear that there's an interest in both of these franchises.
So it means that they can put big money into it."

"Knowing that they'll probably get big money out of it in return.
So yeah cool things to note there in regards to CD Projekt Red.
We won't probably be seeing much from that developer for some time.
Because again both their projects now are I would say at least 18 months away for The Witcher 4."

"Again I say at least.
I would be surprised if it launched in 2027.
Because it's a game of such large scale and standards.
That I think you're looking at 2028 at the very earliest."

"But they haven't said anything about a release date yet.
So that's just pure speculation.
But yeah that's all the time that I have in today's episode of GOTV News.
All the same."

"But I will be back now tomorrow for the final one of the week.
So thank you for joining me and I'll see you all on that one.
Take care everyone."
