From Teen Wolf to DC's twisted Universe and ED - Crystal Reed Comicon Napoli Interview

We sat down with the actress in Naples to discuss her fantasy-filled career path, from younger and older Allison Argent to Gotham’s Sofia Falcone and Swamp Thing’s Abby Arcane, before she teased the upcoming ED and shared her thoughts on AI.

"Hi, Gamereactor friends. We are in Napoli for the 26th Comicon, and I have the pleasure to be joined by Crystal here.
Thank you so much for joining us.
You know, the fandom loves you from Teen Wolf and Allison Argent, so how would you say that role shaped you and sort of shaped the relationship with the fandom and the community?
I think that she definitely affected all parts of my life."

"I was so young when I played her, and I feel like we got to grow up together, and I think that's something that hopefully the community can sense and feel and take away, too.
Mm-hmm, and what about coming back to the role with the film years later? How did you approach that and also keeping the community in mind?
Yeah, well, I think I never, I mean, I hope this doesn't sound bad, but I don't ever approach roles from what I think people might want because that takes away from the honest experience for me, but it was so strange because 10 years had passed for me, and I mean, that in a woman's life is huge, so I experienced so many things in that time period, and it was difficult, but I think I had a lot of support from the producers, which was incredible."

"And let me ask you about entering the DC universe with The Swamp Thing.
What did it mean to you? How did you sort of, you know, you just told me you didn't, you don't take expectations in mind, right? But, you know.
Well, it was hard because I had never played a comic book character of that caliber before, and Abby Arcane is so loved, and Alan Moore's run of Swamp Thing, to me, was just like absolute perfection, so for that one, I did feel a lot of pressure."

"But, yeah, I think I watched a lot, and I read everything, and I was just, I had to, at some point, just put that away and infuse my own experience into her.
That's for DC, but that's not for Batman. What about Sofia [Falcone]?
Sofia, yeah, God. Have you seen her in the comic books?
Yes."

"You know, a criminal, you know, you entered Batman like the wrong way, or the best way.
Yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure, but I am, again, with that, I was, actually, that one I was very, very nervous for because she's, she's, in Gotham, she was written much differently than she is in the comic book, and so Danny Cannon, the creator, just said, do whatever you want with her."

"You can, you know, whatever it is you want, so I did, and I hope, I hope you guys liked it, so.
Okay, what else can you tell us we can look forward to seeing from you in the near future?
I just finished a film called ED. It is a psychological thriller about AI. It's a cautionary tale, which I think everyone should be thinking about these days, and she played, I play a character who developed a program for a car company, and it goes horribly wrong."

"Yeah, that links me to the next question, which is inevitable these days, so how do you feel about that?
How do you feel about AI?
This sort of the creative uses with generative AI and the other uses we are seeing as of late that, of course, impact voice actors, performance actors, etc., and artists. This is all about comics and artists."

"Yeah, I mean, I think in some ways it can be helpful, you know, I, I...
was lucky enough to grow up without the internet for a little while, and then we had it, and I remember thinking, there's so much, there's so much new beautiful information that we can gleam from the internet, and I think AI is a little similar, where it can be very, very useful. I think it's great for science and information."

"I certainly use it for when I'm doing research for characters, so that's, that's very helpful. For instance, like I didn't know much about coding, and I had to learn about that very, very quickly, so I used AI, and that was helpful, but I think, I think I'm not super worried, because there's something about the human experience as an artist that can't be replicated, and in fact, when we look at AI actors, or, you know, simulated humans, there's a, there's a consciousness behind the eyes that you just can't get, and I think that I have hope in humanity that we're gonna be able to tell the difference."

"All right, and final one. You told me about this psychological horror you've worked on, and also, you know, comic adaptations, and is there any genre that you would like to try? You know, this is the festival seasons.
We're going to Cannes in a couple of weeks. Are we meeting you there? No, I wish.
I'm dying to do romantic comedies."

"Like in Hawaii, or somewhere warm, where I can just laugh and play. Or Napoli. Or Napoli, exactly.
So yeah, that would be something I'd love to do, and I also want to get back on stage.
Fantastic. Thank you so much for your time. Grazie mille. Enjoy the show. Bye. Ciao. Take care."
