How to Survive Aboard the Skeld - Among Us Interview with Randall Park and Kimiko Glenn

We chat with Randall Park and Kimiko Glenn, the actors for Red and Teal in Among Us about their survival strategies.

Audio transcription

"Hi Randall, hi Kimiko, I hope you're doing OK.
Kicking things off, I guess, Among Us has been well known, I guess, among gaming circles for quite a while now.
Did you guys have any sort of familiarity with the IP before jumping in?
And if not, what made you sort of, I guess, jump onto this project?
I didn't. I hate to say it."

"But it, I mean, right off the bat, like you get the materials and the script is so good.
It's so funny. All the characters you immediately attach to because like they just are so distinctive and so well written.
And I mean, obviously the drawings are like so funny to me.
Yeah, I didn't either. I wasn't familiar with it."

"As soon as I found out, I looked it up and learned how big of a thing it was.
And also was so fascinated by how they were going to adapt it into a show.
And yeah, like Kimiko said, like reading the scripts and learning about these characters and how, you know, how they fleshed out each character.
And also learning about who was voicing some of the other characters."

"That was really I was like, oh, my God. Yeah, I'd love to be a part of this.
And so, yeah. Yeah. Did not know beforehand, though.
That's very helpful to have a stacked cast.
Yeah, yeah. But don't worry, everyone else is the same."

"No one seems to be familiar, which is really fun because it shows you, I think, the strength of the creation that you guys have gone and have got with it.
And something else I was thinking about as well is that, as you say, the characters are really well defined, but it feels like they all seem to fit the performances that you guys give really well.
Was there any space for sort of like improvisation? Because I guess there's no mouth movements to follow with the voiceover."

"Theoretically, just sort of go with the flow.
Yeah, that was a big question I had going in was like, how are people going to like connect to these characters where you can't really see them like emote?
But then, you know, watching it, I was like, oh, my gosh, you could totally feel what these characters are going through.
And with very little face wise, they were able to do so much."

"But, yeah, we did get to we did get to play a lot.
And you often do in animation get to get to kind of riff here and there.
But but, again, the scripts were so great that, you know, we had we had a great kind of base to play off of.
Yeah."

"I think going with your characters again, like it's such a it feels very much that you just really embody them.
But I was wondering if you found yourselves on sort of a similar situation, do you think the way that your character reacts would be how you would try and survive this sort of horror hellscape?
I guess, you know, no spoilers for anything, but it seems like everyone's got their own little strategies, some great, some bad."

"But I was just wondering.
I don't know if I I think science is how I would act, but I don't know if that's how you survive something.
I don't know. I don't know if turning into a puddle is the strategy.
But, yeah, I think that I would totally be like, ah, that would be me."

"I would be just as incompetent as Red, but I probably wouldn't have that.
I probably wouldn't have that kind of like false bravado that he has.
I would just I would just hide in a corner, you know, immediately.
That's fair enough. I think I could probably do a mix of both."

"What do you think, like after after going in from it, from this sort of outside perspective, what do you think makes the specific spin on the whodunit that Among Us gives?
What do you think makes it so popular and how do you think that will be reflected in the show?
Hmm. I don't know.
I mean, I think that like what's really helpful is like how instantaneously you get sucked into the world."

"And part of what's helpful about that, I think, is it's so simple.
Like the characters are really like deep and three dimensional and like and you instantly know what they're about.
But like part of that, I think, is the simplicity of like green, orange, yellow.
You know, like you can like immediately, very easily just get to know the characters very quickly."

"And and then it's like easy to track what's going on, even though it's all so quick.
So I think I think that's part of the beauty of it.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Agreed. I think there is a simplicity to it.
And I mean, the whole kind of murder mystery of it all, the whodunit of it all."

"And I just think it's it's just such a basic thing about us as humans.
We're just we just love it. You know, like we love figuring out a puzzle.
And we and we all like love watching people try to survive, you know, because I guess that's what we're all trying to do with life.
Yeah. So it's very it's just a very simple, entertaining, fun ride that that that yeah, that we go on in the show."

"And if hypothetically, metaphorically, I'm not going to go into any spoilers, but hypothetically, if you were lucky enough to survive this or your character, I guess, lucky enough to survive this, would you be up for returning for a season two?
I've spoken to her and Dennis. He says he's got a plan.
I spoke to Elijah in a bit and they said, yeah, you know, hell yeah. So I was wondering why not?
It's such a fun project. Why would I say no?
Yeah, hypothetically. Yeah, yeah."

"I guess there's just one final quick question. And if you were trapped aboard the skeld, would you rather have the security of being an imposter?
Or I guess the danger of being a crewmate? Who would you rather? Which would you rather be?
Hypothetically, of course, not giving you any character spoilers.
I have to preface everything with that. Yeah, I mean, I'm a very bad liar."

"So I think I think I wouldn't bode well if I was like a an imposter.
Obviously, I think I'd be more I think I'd be more protected. But I think I'd be like, guys, I did it. I'm sorry.
I don't know. I feel bad really easily and it shows. Yeah.
I don't think I don't I would not want to be on the skeld, period."

"I just just the whole thing is very scary to me as as an imposter, as a crewmate.
It's just it's just too much stress, too much stress.
I'd rather be on an island somewhere. Yeah, I feel that.
Maybe that's season two. Maybe that's an island. Love it."

"Sorry, guys, I think. Thank you so much for your time. Of course.
Alex, thank you. Great talking to you."
