Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is in development at WayForward following a successful Kickstarter and Gamereactor recently spoke to project coordinator Jeremy Pryer about the fourth game in the series and how it will change things up for Shantae.

Half-Genie Hero is a "brand new HD adventure. All the other ones were pixel-based art, this is the first one where it has more of a hand-drawn feel to it. If you'd played the previous ones, Pirate's Curse was very Metroidvania-ish where you went to different worlds and explored them. This one has got a bit more like Duck Tales, Megaman style level system but it still has a Metroidvania element".

Returning to the series are forms as well. "Like the previous entry, Risky's Revenge, it returns Shantae with magic forms and which the magic forms you can navigate the worlds in different ways". The five forms revealed so far are mermaid, crab, elephant, monkey and spider forms, the latter two being shown at the E3 demo as well. There will be eight in the full game and Pryer said that this will encourage players to replay levels to explore new areas with different forms.

In terms of the story, the E3 demo showed attack on Scuttle Town. "She's the guardian genie of the town in all the entries of the game and usually there's an antagonist at the beginning that always seems to want to mess up her town", Pryer said, but "there's not too much details that we've revealed so far about the overall narrative of the game" apart from the fact that Risky Boots returns as a villain.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is set for digital release on PC, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One and Wii U this Autumn, with physical versions also coming to the PS4, PS Vita and Wii U.
