Just the other day we reported on the fact that We Happy Few had been refused classification in Australia. Now we know what.

According to the classification board, the reason behind the ban is exactly what many speculated it was, the depiction of drugs in the game, something that goes against the country's strict laws.

We Happy Few is set in an alternate version of the 1960s where England has been invaded by the Nazis and the population all take a drug called joy to keep them smiling.

There was a statement sent to PC Gamer but it included a few spoilers (which is why we didn't include it, if you must know follow the link), however the conclusion details the reasons behind the decision:

The game's drug-use mechanic making game progression less difficult constitutes an incentive or reward for drug-use and therefore, the game exceeds the R 18+ classification that states, "drug use related to incentives and rewards is not permitted".

Therefore, the game warrants being Refused Classification.

Compulsion also released a statement, in particular addressing the Australian Kickstarter backers who may miss out on the game following the rating refusal.

To our Australian fans, we share your frustration. We will work with the ACB on the classification. If the government maintains its stance, we will make sure that you can get a refund, and we will work directly with affected Kickstarter backers to figure something out. We would appreciate if you give us a little bit of time to appeal the decision before making a call.

REVIEW. Written by Bengt Lemne

"It may have been the art style and weird world that drew us in, but what kept us going was the narrative."
