We caught up with Impulse Gear co-founder Randy Nolta to learn more about Farpoint and the new PSVR Aim Controller.
"We're trying to give you the experience you would expect from a first-person shooter, but bring that to VR," says Nolta. "In doing that we've been working with Sony to create what's called the PSVR Aim Controller. The controller is used to give you one to one tracking inside the game."
Far more advanced than a Move controller with some added plastic Nolta explained how important it was to get the weight down and that the device can be used for other games in the future, and not just first person shooters. But sorting the controller is just one potential issue with bringing the FPS genre to VR.
"Some of the challenges really come in with how we have to design our levels and how we have to design our character interactions," says Nolta. "Because we have a camera that faces forward we want to make sure that we're constantly in tracking range. So in the front of the PSVR Aim Controller you'll see a glowing ball, that's used for tracking your position and rotation in the world. We want to make sure we're constantly designing the experience to take advantage of that and understand what the player is going to be seeing at all times. So our levels are built in a specific way where we take advantage of how the hardware works."
No firm release date has been set for Farpoint, but Nolta did say that they would talk more about this and other features in the coming months.
